Medical clinic No. 4 was founded in 1945, upon the establishment of Chisinau Institute of Medicine. At the beginning it was named the Chair of Military Internal Medicine. Along the way, it was renamed Chair of Internal Medicine No. 2, then - internal medicine No. 5, internal medicine No. 6, internal medicine No. 4, and since 2012 - Discipline (Chair) of gastroenterology, Medical Clinic No. 4, within the Department of Internal Medicine. Since its founding, Timofei Moşneaga Republican Clinical Hospital public health institution has been the Chair’s clinical base. In 2011, the Hospital of the Ministry of Internal Affairs public health institution became its clinical base too.

Heads of the Chair:

1945-1951 - Prof. N. Kornetov. He was the country's first main therapist, organizer and President of the Society of Therapists in Chisinau.

1951-1966 - Prof. Mihail Poliuhov. He is the author of over 40 scientific papers; trained several doctors in medical sciences, including Professor C. Babiuc, Associate Professor V. Botnari, Professor V. T. Dumbravă.

1966-1971 - Prof. Tatiana Korovina, the main hematologist of Moldova, the founder of the Hematology Service. She trained a pleiad of highly qualified specialists, including E. Streletchi, PhD in medical sciences.

1962-1986 - Prof. M. Bocicariov, specialist in pulmonology, field therapy and toxicology. He made a great contribution to the development of national pulmonology. He is the author of three monographs. Under his leadership, PhD theses were defended by the following specialists: I. Butorov, V. Butorova, N. Bodrug.

1987-2016 - Professor Vlada-Tatiana Dumbravă, who laid the foundations of national gastroenterology and hepatology field in the country.

From 2016 until now, Eugen Tcaciuc, Doctor Habilitated in Medical Sciences, Associate Professor fronted the Discipline.

It should be mentioned that over the years, the following academic staff members have worked at the Department: T. Moşneaga, C. Babiuc, S. Matcovschi, I. Butorov, N. Bodrug, M. Bogulean, E. Streletchi, L. Grib, A. Vasilachi, E. Bivol, T Cepoi, P. Testemitanu, V. Starostenco, A. Negreaţă, G. Gorea, A. Calinina, G. Caraneagra, J. Raşciupchin, M. Marian, L. Bondarenco, I. Maximova, E. Celac, G. Neghina , E. Cebotareova, V. Bădărău.

At the time of the Chair founding, the teaching process was planned for V-VI-year students in all internal medicine disciplines, including field therapy, hematology and endocrinology. After the establishment of the respective departments (chairs), the teaching process focused on the basic disciplines of internal medicine: cardiology, gastroenterology, nephrology, rheumatology, allergology, pathology. In the course of time, the Chair trained students of Medicine, Pediatrics, and Public Health Faculties. Since 2011, the Chair has been providing gastroenterology and hepatology courses for V-year students, Faculty of Medicine, and optional courses in dietetics and clinical immunology for VI-year students, Faculty of Medicine. Since 2012, the Chair has become the base for the continuous training in gastroenterology and hepatology of gastroenterologists, internists and family doctors.

In 1989, in addition to the Chair, the Scientific Laboratory of Gastroenterology was set up. The chair is the organizer and coordinator of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Service of Moldova. On the initiative of the Chair, HEPATEG non-state organization of gastroenterologists and hepatologists was founded.
