A brief history

Clinic of Internal Medicine No 4 was founded in 1945 when the Institute of Medicine from Chisinau was established. Initially it was named Department of Military Internal Medicine, the name has changed across the time – Department of Internal Medicine No. 2, then Internal Medicine No. 5, Internal Medicine No. 6, Internal Medicine No.4, and finally since 2012 – Gastroenterology, Clinic of Internal Medicine No 4, Department of Internal Medicine. Republican Clinical Hospital and Hospital of Ministry of Internal Affairs are the clinics of our Department.

Heads of the Department:

1945-1951 – Prof. N. Cornetov. He was the first Principal Internist of the Republic, founder and chairman of the Internal Medicine Society from Chisinau.

1951-1966 – Professor Michael Poliuhov. He is the author of over 40 scientific papers

1966-1971 – Professor Tatiana Corovina, Principal Hematologist from Moldova, founder of hematological service of the country.

1962-1986 – Prof. M. Bocicariov, pulmonologist and specialist in Military Medicine and Toxicology. He made a great contribution to the development of National Pulmonology

1987 – present – Department is headed by Prof. Vlada-Tatiana Dumbrava. Prof. V.-T. Dumbrava founded National Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Over the years doctors T. Moşneaga, C. Babiuc, S. Matcovschi, I. Butorov, N. Bodrug, M. Bogulean, E. Streleţchi, L. Grib, A. Vasilachi, E. Bivol, T. Cepoi, P. Testemiţanu, V. Starostenco, A. Negreaţă, G. Gorea, A. Calinin, G. Caraneagra, J. Raşciupchin, M. Marian, L. Bondarenco, I. Maximova, E. Celac, G. Neghina, E. Cebotareova, V. Bădărău have worked at the Department.

When founding our Department, the training was planned for V and VI year students in all disciplines of Internal Medicine, including Military Medicine, Hematology and Endocrinology. After wards, the training focused on basic disciplines of Internal Medicine: Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Rheumatology, Allergology and Occupational diseases. Over the years the Department tought students from Faculty of Medicine, Pediatrics, and Public Health. Since 2011 the Department has held the training in the discipline of Gastroenterology, Hepatology for students of V year, Faculty of Medicine; and Nutrition and Clinical Immunology – the optional courses for students of V and VI years, Faculty of Medicine. Since 2012 the Department is the basis for continuing training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology of Gastroenterologists, Internists, and Family Doctors.

In 1989 was created Gastroenterology Scientific Laboratory. Department is the organizer and coordinator of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Republic of Moldova. At the initiative of our Clinic the Non-Governmental Organization of Gastroenterology and Hepatology “HEPATEG” was founded.
